A wythe is a continuous vertical section of masonry one unit in thickness. A wythe may stand independently or be interlocked with adjoining wythes. Single wythe construction can serve as a structural wall and exterior finish in one system, while a nonstructural single wythe of brick may function as veneer.

Single wythe systems are often selected for economy, permanence and low maintenance. Using a single line of oversized brick or block as both the structural system and outside finish can simplify the assembly. Structural engineers may also incorporate steel columns within the exterior wall where required by the design.

These masonry systems are durable and inherently fire resistant, with designs capable of fire ratings up to four hours. They can also be effective where noise abatement, fire separation and durability are priorities, including offices, schools and hotels.

Precast wall systems can be produced in solid, sandwich and thin-shell configurations. Panels may be erected horizontally or vertically and used across residential, commercial, institutional and industrial applications. Depending on the design, they can be nonloadbearing or loadbearing and can carry floor and roof loads as well as lateral loads.

Its natural resistance to mold can help reduce concerns related to VOCs and off-gassing, while concrete thermal mass supports energy efficiency by helping reduce heating and cooling peaks and loads.

The mass of concrete also provides sound-reduction benefits. Resistance to fire, natural disasters, insects, termites, decay, mold and mildew contributes to durability and lower maintenance. Exterior surfaces can often be cleaned without damage and, when painted, typically require less frequent repainting.
